Oxygen – part of the fire triangle.

Oxygen is necessary for fire to burn and is part of the fire triangle.

The air that we breathe contains a constant amount of oxygen so, while there is an air supply, a fire can continue to burn provided fuel is available and the fire generates sufficient heat to turn the fuel into gas to feed the fire.

Simply by using up the available oxygen a fire is a threat to life. The chemicals produced in the fire will also increase that threat.

 

Flame retardants work by interrupting the fire triangle to prevent a small fire becoming a larger fire and effectively a larger ignition source that will continue to enable the fire to burn.
