FRETWORK SMOULDER TRIALS

This is the first set of tests completed. It must be stressed that these are not tests that would normally be carried out. Composite tests like these are used to grade Outer Cover or Filling or a specific combination but adding a fleece in between the cover and the filling foam asks a lot of questions about relevance and reproducability.

The 2 fabrics used are

1 NON FR cotton 100% Brown at 355 gsm. A very high quality twill weave in fine yarns (not a typical, cheap cotton?).

2 The standard PES TEVIRA CS test fabric as described in the FFR.

The pictures show the materials when assembling the rig, during the ignition and after the tests were stopped.

Little evidence of progressive smoulder was seen but we are left with questions:

1. Why did the Brown not smoulder (non FR fabric)?

2. Did the cigarettes burn properly?

3. Is the L shaped rig suited to do multi component composites using the basic block foam size?

Conclusion:

Lack of smoulder when expected.

The fibre filling could have protected the foam but did not react as if smoulder had developed.
